Ancient cultural practices like dowry and other social evils such as female infanticide & female foeticide are still prevalent in many parts of India. Daughter's Day is observed to spread awareness about these problems.

September 5 was chosen as the International Day of Charity to observe the death anniversary of Mother Teresa.

Hindi Diwas holds special significance as it marks the adaptation of Hindi as an official language by the Constituent Assembly in the year 1949. The date was chosen by Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India.

15th September - National Engineer's Day
Engineer’s Day is celebrated on September 15 every year. The day is celebrated to recognize the contribution of engineers in the development of the nation. The day marks the birth anniversary of the engineering pioneer of India, Sir Mokshagundam Vishweshvaraya, (popularly known as Sir MV). He was awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his exceptional contribution to the building of India in 1955. He has also conferred the British knighthood and served as Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918.
In 1968, the Indian government declared Sir M Visvesvaraya’s birth anniversary as Engineers’ Day. Sir MV was regarded as the “Father of Modern Mysore”. Since then, this day is celebrated to honor and acknowledge all engineers who have contributed and still do so to build a modern and developed India.

She was a freedom fighter and long-time veteran activist living in rural India
Remembering Indumati Patankar, a freedom fighter and long-time veteran activist, on her birth anniversary.
• In 1942, she joined the 1942 Independence movement against the British rule, organizing women and spreading the Rashtra Seva Dal.
• She gradually started taking part in the underground movements of carrying arms (pistols and revolvers) to the fighters.
• She was the core leader of Stree Mukti Sangharsh Chalwal with several other rural women fighting against violence and for survival and livelihoods.
• Through this work she led the struggle of parityakta (abandoned/deserted) women.

WORLD BAMBOO DAY
World Bamboo Day, with an aim to promote the cultivation of Bamboo globally and promote environment friendly Bamboo products.
HISTORY
This day was officially established by the World Bamboo organization at the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok in 2009.
World Bamboo Organization was set up at the 1992 International Bamboo Congress in Japan.
About Bamboo
• Bamboos are a diverse group of evergreen perennial flowering plants in the subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae.
• It can grow in dryland areas, but it yields best when well-irrigated. It requires the same amount of water as sugarcane, about 10-20 litres per day per plant.
• It can tolerate both heavy and low rainfall, every year it gives out 8-10 shoots.
• Every bamboo plant has a capacity to absorb about 400 kg of CO2 a year.

This day is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year along with International Week of the Deaf. The United Nations adopted in 2017.

History of International Day of Sign Languages:
The proposal for the Day came from the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), a federation of 135 national associations of deaf people, representing approximately 70 million deaf people’s human rights worldwide. The choice of 23 September commemorates the date that the WFD was established in 1951. The International Day of Sign Languages was first celebrated in 2018 as part of the International Week of the Deaf.
SIGNIFCANCE
The international Day of Sign Languages is an unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users.
24th September - National Service Scheme Day (NSS Day).
24 September 1969, the then Union Education Minister V.K.R.V. Rao launched the NSS at 37 universities all states. The scheme has been extended to all states and universities in the country, and also +2 level institutes in many states.

The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world-famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Odisha, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release. It signifies the movement in life across time and space, the symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.
The eight bars in the wheel represents 24 hours of a day. The red color indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue color indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS.

In India, the Antyodaya Diwas is observed every year on September 25, to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. Antyodaya means “uplifting the poorest of the poor” or “rise of the last person”.
The day was declared by the Modi Government on September 25, 2014, and officially celebrated since 2015.
About Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya:
Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, born in Mathura in 1916 was one of the key leaders of Bharatiya Jana Sangh from which the BJP later emerged. He was the leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh from 1953 to 1968.
Deendayal Upadhyaya was a humanist, economist, journalist, philosopher and abled statesman.
Deendayal Upadhyaya was introduced to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) by his classmate named Baluji Mahashabde
Deendayal Upadhyaya cleared the civil services examination. He, however, didn’t join the service and became a volunteer of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
In the 1940s, Deendayal Upadhyaya launched ‘Rashtra Dharma’, a monthly journal, from Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow for spreading the ideology of Hindutva nationalism. Later, he started ‘Panchjanya’, a weekly magazine, and a daily, ‘Swadesh’.
Deendayal Upadhyaya’s philosophical idea of ‘Integral Humanism’ was adopted in 1965 as the official doctrine of the Jan Sangh and later the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Deendayal Upadhyaya advocated ‘Samyanit Upabhog’ (sustainable consumption). He did not favour the exploitation of Mother Nature practised by the capitalist societies of the West.
Deendayal Upadhyaya was found dead under mysterious circumstances near the Mughalsarai railway station in Uttar Pradesh in the wee hours of February 11, 1968. Later, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found that he was killed by robbers.
25th September - World Pharmacist Day
World Pharmacist Day is observed globally on 25th September every year. This day is celebrated to create awareness about the role of a pharmacist in improving health. The day was an initiative of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) along with the council of this organization. This year’s theme is “Pharmacy: Always trusted for your health“.
History of World Pharmacist Day:
The day was designated in 2009 by the FIP Council (International Pharmaceutical Federation or Federation International Pharmaceutical) at the World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Istanbul, Turkey. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to pharmacies and the positive benefits they offer when it comes to health and FIP encourages all its members to participate to make the event a success.

The United Nations observes 26 September every year as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

World Environmental Health Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the health of our environment.

The IFEH was founded in 1986 with its headquarters in London. The organization is a body of 44 member-nations. India is not a member of the IFEH.
